Two years ago, pt 3: On Being Ignored

I'm looking back at some writing I did two years ago.  For the full explanation, see this entry.

By the third day we were away, I remember wanting to write something a little lighter.  Our dog, Bristow, not the most introverted creature ever, provided the material.

On Being Ignored
1/5/08

Scratch at the wall, wait for response, trot down the hall to the bathroom, nose the toilet lid up and down twice. Poke the head into the hallway, look to see if attention is gained, sigh, whimper, run over and lick a bare hand or foot, go lie down as directed (but only after being directed four times, with increasing threat in the telling). Wait just long enough, get up, go the the tea box, with a lid perfect size for banging, nose it up, drop, repeat. Sigh. Hell hath no fury… trial bark. “Quiet!” Whimper. Give up, sulk on the couch, and lick anus.  Wait just long enough to forget the rejection, hop down off the couch, and scratch at the wall…
